Jehovah Sabaoth- Lord of Hosts

I Samuel 1:3-Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the Lord.

Jehovah Sabaoth is another one of God’s names, and it means The Lord of Hosts or Lord of Armies. This names occurs more than 270 times in the Old Testament. It denotes the power and might of God. It is declaring His reign over heaven and earth and over all armies, earthly and spiritual. It is declaring His dominion and sovereignty over all.

The first time Jehovah Sabaoth is used is in the verse above,  I Samuel 1:3. This verse is talking about Elkanah, whose wife was Hannah. Elkanah would go yearly to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of Hosts in Shiloh.

We see this name again in I Samuel 1:11 when Hannah was praying and made a vow, I Samuel 1:11-And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.” God heard Hannah’s prayer. She had a son named Samuel, and she did dedicate him back to God. Samuel became a prophet of God.

Another time we see this name is when is when David is talking to Goliath in I Samuel 17:45-David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” David defeated Goliath that day.

Speaking about David, after he became the king of Israel,  2 Samuel 5:10 says, And David became greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.

David calls God the Lord of hosts in Psalm 24:10- Who is this King of glory? The Lord of Hosts, He is the King of glory! Selah

These are just a few of the over 270 verses that mention God as Jehovah Sabaoth, the Lord of Hosts. He wants us to know that He is all powerful and mighty and sovereign over everything.  He fights for us. There is no one or nothing more powerful or mighty or above Him.

God alone makes miracles happen. God alone gives us victories. God alone is worthy of all the glory and praise forever and ever. He is our Jehovah Sabaoth.

Many blessings,

Desiree
