Pointing people to Jesus with encouragement and tangible ways to grow in their Christian faith.

Jehovah Jireh- My Provider

Genesis 22:8,14. 8. Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. 14. Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

Jehovah Jireh is one of the names of God, and it means “the Lord will provide.” This passage in  Genesis 22:1-14 is when Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice his son Isaac. In verse 8, Isaac asks Abraham where the lamb was for the sacrifice, and Abraham tells him that God will provide a lamb for the sacrifice. In verse 14, after the angel called out and stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac, a ram was provided as a sacrifice, and Abraham called that place, “the Lord will provide.” God provided a substitute in place of Isaac.

God will provide for our needs. Philippians 4:19 says, and my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Paul was talking to the Philippians here because they had supported Him in his time of need, and it applies to us as well. God is not lacking in anything. This is talking about more than material needs. It’s talking about our spiritual needs as well, such as faith, grace, mercy, etc.

God has already provided our greatest need, salvation, by sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. On the cross, Jesus said,  “It is finished.” Everything that we will ever need was done on the cross. When  we accept this gift, we have eternal life, freedom (Galations 5:1), healing (Isaiah 53:5), wholeness, forgiveness of sins, holiness, and so much more. These things are ours because of the work of the cross.

The  story of Abraham and Isaac points us to the cross- our greatest need that God provided. There are similarities between the story of Abraham and Isaac and Jesus sacrificing His life for us. Isaac was Abrahams only son of promise. Jesus is Gods only begotten son. Abram and Isaac arrived at the place of sacrifice on the 3rd day. Jesus rose on the 3rd day. Jesus was crucified in the same region of Mount Moriah that Isaac was going to be sacrificed. Jesus is the Lamb of God,  who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29), and He became our substitute, just like the ram, (an adult sheep), was substituted for Isaac.

Next time you read the story of Abraham and Isaac, let it remind you of the greatest sacrifice and provision that God gave us – Jesus dying on the cross. Because of this great sacrifice and provision, everything that the cross provided for us is ours when we accept Jesus into our lives- eternal life, forgiveness of sins, healing, wholeness, holiness, and so much more.

God provided the sacrifice that was needed to save the world (John 3:16). Because He has provided this, we can trust Him to provide for what we need here on earth – and not just our physical needs but, most importantly, our spiritual needs. He is the source of every spiritual need we have such as mercy, grace, love, peace, patience etc.  God is abundant in these things. He has a never ending supply.  He wants to give them to us. He loves to answer prayers that bring us closer to Him.

Trust Him to be what you need today. He is Jehovah Jireh.

Many blessings,

Desiree
