Pointing to Jesus

Pointing people to Jesus with encouragement and tangible ways to grow in their Christian faith.

Be Blessed- Part 3- Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 5:5- Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.

Meekness means being mild or gentle. It is being humble, and it is strength under control. It is using power without undue harshness. It is not easily provoked.

Meekness does not mean weakness. It does not mean that we don’t speak against wrong or injustice. It does mean that we don’t take revenge or retaliation against the wrong or injustice – we leave that to God.

Jesus describes himself as being meek and gentle in Matthew 11:28 & 29. It says, “Come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in  heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

The reward for being meek is that we will inherit the earth. We have a spiritual inheritance as Christians because we are children of God. Romans 8:16 & 17 says, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, and if children, then heirs- heirs of God and fellow heirs of Christ……”  When we accept Jesus as  Savior and Lord of our lives, we are in the family of God, and as such, we have certain privileges and access to the great treasures of God here on this earth such as mercy, grace, the Holy Spirit- just to name a few.

We also have an inheritance in heaven. I Peter 1:3 & 4 says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,”

When we are humble and gentle like Jesus, we have an inheritance both on this earth and in heaven. What a blessing to know that we will spend eternity with Jesus!
