Pointing to Jesus

Pointing people to Jesus with encouragement and tangible ways to grow in their Christian faith.

Control Yourself

Proverbs 25:28- A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

Biblical self-control can be defined as the virtue of one who controls their sinful desires, passions, thoughts, words, and actions through the power of the Holy Spirit. In the KJV, it is also called Temperance. It is the ninth and last fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galations 5:22-23.

A person who has self- control is not impulsive and has discipline. They do not go to excesses or extremes. It is a virtue that we are to add as we are seeking to grow in our Christian walk according to 2 Peter 1:6- “and knowledge with self-control, and self- control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness.

From Proverbs 25:28 at the top of this post, self-control acts as a wall of defense and protection against the enemy. It can keep us from making the wrong choices when tempted to do something that would be harmful to us or our relationship with God or others. You also need self-control to help with the other 8 fruit of the Spirit listed before it in Galations 5:22-23.

Since it is a fruit of the Spirit, it is developed as we grow in our relationship with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also called the Helper in the Bible. He helps us when we need help with something. We should seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit. As we are filled with Him, good fruit will naturally flow out of us.

Blessings,

Desiree
