Pointing to Jesus

Pointing people to Jesus with encouragement and tangible ways to grow in their Christian faith.

Light our Way

Psalm 119:105- Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

The Bible (God’s Word) is the inspired sacred writings that guide us and teach us about God, His character, and His ways. It’s the book about God and His plan of salvation and redemption for all people. We see Jesus in every book of the Bible – even when the name of Jesus or God is not mentioned, He is still present and working.

Whether you are a new Christian or have been a Christian for a long time, reading the Bible should be a priority. The more you read the Bible, the more you will learn of God’s ways.

The goal should be consistent, daily reading. That was a goal of mine for many years. From the time I was a young child, I wanted to read the Bible more. I knew a lot about the Bible. I went to a Christian school, went to church every Sunday, and memorized many Bible verses. I remember I was about 8 or 9 years old asking my pastor to pray for me that I would read my Bible more. I know that was the work of the Holy Spirit in my life, giving me the desire to read the Bible. Through the years, I would continue to read it all the way through, just not on a consistent, daily basis.

It wasn’t until about 3 or 4 years ago that I started reading it on a consistent daily basis. It’s the first thing I read/listen to in the morning before I check my emails, Facebook or Instagram . I use the You Version app (which I highly recommend). I put my earpod in and listen to it. Sometimes, I follow along as it reads.

The enemy wants to keep us from reading the Bible because he knows how powerful it is. Jesus himself used scripture to defeat the enemy. You can read about that in Matthew 4, Mark 1, and Luke 4.

The goal of reading the Bible on a consistent daily basis is not just for information but for transformation. We want to be changed by what we read, not just be informed.

If you find it a challenge to read the Bible or don’t have the desire to read the Bible, ask God to help you and to give you the desire. He loves to answer prayers that bring us closer to Him. Find a version of the Bible that is easy for you to understand. Start with a short amount of time and keep increasing it. My sister gave me a devotional book for my birthday recently, and in the back of it, it says, “A little God time can make a big difference in your day.” I love that quote! Before you read, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and help you understand what you are reading. The Holy Spirit is the best teacher. A study Bible also helps and explains what you are reading. You can ask these 2 questions when you are reading- 1. What does this teach me about God? And 2. How can I apply what I am reading to my life? We can not and will not live our lives perfectly, but we can live them purposefully– on purpose, with purpose.

Psalm 119:11- I have stored up Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You.

Many blessings,

Desiree
